# Take card payments

> Connect Stripe once and every invoice you send gets a Pay button. Card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, straight into your own bank.

Waiting on a bank transfer is the slowest part of getting paid. Connect Stripe once and every invoice you send carries a **Pay** button, so the client can settle it from their phone while they're stood in the kitchen looking at it.

## Connect Stripe

Head to [**Settings → Money → Getting paid**](/settings/money/payments) and tap **Connect Stripe**. Stripe takes you through their own sign-up, asks for your business and bank details, and sends you back to Mucka when it's done.

**Already on Stripe?** Sign in with the login you already use. Stripe reuses the business details and the checks it has already done on you, and brings your bank details across, so there's very little to fill in and nothing to prove again. It does set up a separate Stripe account for the payments that come through Mucka, so the account you use today carries on exactly as it is, with its own rates, payouts and records.

You only do this once, and only an owner or someone with workspace permissions can do it, because it decides where your money lands.

## What it costs

Two separate charges, and it's worth being clear which is which:

- **Stripe** charge their standard rate, 1.5% and 20p on a normal UK card. That's their fee for moving the money, and it comes out of the payment before it reaches you.
- **Mucka** add a flat **30p** for each invoice that actually gets paid. Flat, not a percentage, so a £4,000 boiler install costs you the same 30p as a £90 call-out.

Nothing is charged on an invoice that never gets paid.

**You can't add these onto the client's bill.** Adding a card surcharge to a consumer's invoice isn't legal in the UK, so the fee comes out of your side. Mucka won't offer you a way to pass it on.

## Where the Pay button shows up

Once you're connected, it appears everywhere the client might open the invoice:

- in the **invoice email**, as a button under your message
- on the **invoice PDF**, as a link they can tap or type in
- on the **online quote page**, if the job started as a Live Quote, so the whole job sits on one link from quote to final bill
- as a **QR code on the job screen**, so you can get paid while you are still stood there. See [Take payment on site](/help/invoices/take-payment-on-site)

Your bank details stay on the invoice as well. Plenty of clients still prefer a transfer, and taking that away would be a step backwards.

**Don't want card on a big one?** On a £5,000 install that 1.5% is around £75, and a transfer costs you nothing. You can untick **Accept card payments** on any single invoice, or set a figure in Settings and have Mucka do it for you above that. ## What happens when they pay

The client taps **Pay**, Stripe handles the card details, and they're done. On your side:

- the payment appears against the invoice on its own, with nothing for you to type in
- the invoice status moves to **paid**, or **partially paid** if they've only settled some of it
- you get a notification
- it syncs out to Xero, QuickBooks or FreeAgent like any other payment

Card details never touch Mucka's systems or yours. Stripe handle all of that.

## Common gotchas

- **Stripe still finishing your checks.** After you sign up, Stripe sometimes takes a while to verify your bank account. You can take payments as soon as they've enabled charges. The money waits in your Stripe balance until the checks clear, then pays out as normal.
- **Invoices sent before you connected.** Those emails have already gone out without a Pay button. Re-send the invoice and the new one will have it.
- **Very small invoices.** Card networks have a minimum. Anything under 30p can't be paid by card, so those need a transfer.
- **Refunds.** Do those in your Stripe dashboard for now. Mucka doesn't have a refund button yet, so record the refund against the invoice afterwards so your figures match.
- **The money is yours, not ours.** Payments settle straight into your own Stripe account. Mucka never holds your takings at any point.
