> Add a Pay by bank transfer button to your invoices. Your customer approves it in their banking app, the money arrives in minutes, and the fee is capped at £4.

Card fees add up on a big job: 1.5% of a £3,000 boiler is £45. **Pay by Bank** puts a second button on your invoices, **Pay by bank transfer**, that goes through GoCardless instead. The fee is capped, so the same boiler costs you about **£4**.

Your customer taps the button, picks their bank, and approves the payment in their own banking app, the same way they'd approve any payment. No card, no typing in sort codes. The money comes straight into your GoCardless account.

## Switch it on

Head to [**Settings → Money → Getting paid**](/settings/money/payments) and scroll to **Pay by bank transfer**.

1. **Connect GoCardless**, if you haven't already. If you collect service plans by Direct Debit, it's the same connection: you're already set. Otherwise tap **I already use GoCardless** if you have an account, or **Set up GoCardless** if you don't.
2. Once GoCardless has checked your details (usually a working day or two), switch on **Offer Pay by Bank on invoices**.

That's it. Every invoice you've sent and every one you send from now on shows the button, until you switch it off. Only someone who can manage billing can change it.

## Where it shows

On your customer's invoice page, under the total, beside the card button if you take cards. The invoice email, the PDF and the WhatsApp link all take them to that page.

If you've switched card off on an invoice, or you've set a figure that turns card off on big jobs, **the bank button stays**. A big bill is exactly where it saves you the most.

So to take card on small jobs and bank only on big ones, set an amount under **Big jobs**, in **Settings for card payments** on the same page. Invoices over it show the bank button and no card. See [Turn card payments off on a big job](/help/invoices/turn-off-card-payments).

Your bank details stay on the invoice too, for anyone who'd rather send the transfer themselves.

## What happens when they pay

When GoCardless confirms the payment, normally within minutes, it goes against the invoice on its own as a bank transfer. The invoice moves to **paid**, or **partially paid** if there's more to come, and goes across to Xero, QuickBooks or FreeAgent like any other payment. The money pays out from GoCardless to your bank on your usual GoCardless payout schedule.

## What it costs

- **GoCardless:** on their standard plan, **1% + 20p, never more than £4** a payment. GoCardless take it before it reaches you.
- **Mucka:** nothing.

| Invoice | By card through Stripe | Pay by Bank |
|---|---|---|
| £90 | £1.85 | £1.10 |
| £450 | £7.25 | £4.00 |
| £3,000 | £45.50 | £4.00 |

(The card column includes Mucka's 30p per card payment.)

## Good to know

- **It can't be charged back.** Your customer pushed the payment from their own bank, so it isn't like a card payment they can dispute later.
- **No Apple Pay or Google Pay on this button**, and your customer needs a UK banking app. That's why the card button stays for anyone who wants it.
- **Refunds** are done in your GoCardless account. Record the refund against the invoice afterwards so your figures match.
- **Disconnecting GoCardless** takes the button off your invoices straight away, and stops any service plan collections that go through it.
