> Add a discount as its own line, in pounds or as a percentage, so the customer sees the full price and what you've knocked off it.

You've priced the job at £2,124 and agreed £1,900 with the customer. You could just change the price. But a separate discount line shows them the full price and what you've taken off it, and that tends to go down better than a lower number with no explanation.

A discount in Mucka is an ordinary line with a minus price.

## Adding one

Under the lines on a quote or an invoice, tap **Add a discount**.

- **£ off**: type the amount, say 224, and you get a line called **Discount** at -£224.00.
- **% off**: type the percentage, say 10, and Mucka works it out from the lines on the document and calls the line **Discount (10%)**.

It's a normal line after that, so you can reword it ("Discount, agreed upon", "Goodwill discount") or delete it. You can also type a minus price straight into any line's price box.

On a quote that gives the customer choices, the discount comes off whichever options they pick, like any other fixed line.

You can also ask Mucka in the chat or on a call: *"take £150 off the boiler quote"* or *"put a 10% discount on it"*.

## Things to know

- **A percentage is worked out once.** If you change the prices afterwards, the discount line stays at the figure it came to. Delete it and add it again to recalculate.
- **It comes off before VAT.** The VAT is worked out on the price after the discount, which is how HMRC expects it.
- **It can't take the total below £0.** If a discount is bigger than everything else on the document, Mucka names the line and won't save until you change it.
- **It goes across to your accounts as a line.** When the quote becomes an invoice, the discount line comes with it. Xero, QuickBooks and Sage take it as an ordinary minus line.
- **It isn't a deposit.** Money the customer has already paid you belongs on the quote's [payment schedule](/help/quotes/take-a-deposit-on-a-quote), which takes it off the final invoice for you.
